Pearl Shapes & Sizes

Pearls can occur naturally in practically every shape and size.

The eight best known shapes are: Baroque, Button (as in, cute as a button in button pearls), Coin, Keshi, Potato, Oval, Ringed, and Round or Semi-round! Perfectly round pearls are the rarest and are considered by many to be the most valuable (But, of course at Honora, we know beauty comes in ALL forms).

The general rule of thumb regarding pearl size is this  - the longer the time a pearl spends growing in a mollusk, the larger it will eventually become. Can you guess the size of the largest pearl in the world?

For centuries, the largest pearl on record was known as the “Pearl of Allah”. It measures measures 24 cm in diameter (9.45 inches) and weighs 6.4 kg (14.1 lb)!

Unbelievably, another giant pearl has been discovered off the coast of the Philippines- that is FIVE TIMES LARGER than the previous record holder!

The new record holder measures an astounding 1ft foot wide and 2.2 feet long! It weighs 34kg - dwarfing its predecessor, the Pearl of Allah.

The fisherman who found this new pearl actually made the discovery TEN years ago off the coast of the Philippines. However, he kept the priceless gem a secret saving it as a "good luck charm". Unfortunately, in 2016 a fire at the property forced him to clear out his modest wooden home. While we wish the pearl brought him better luck, we are grateful the public now gets to know about its existence!
